"Development and optical characterization of new photonic materials employing a 30 direct laser writing technique (Nanoscribe)"

Reference areas: Photonics - Nanotechnologies

The master thesis project here proposed is based on the development and optical characterization of new photonic materials employing a 3D direct laser writing technique (Nanoscribe). Such a method makes it possible to optically write 3D polymeric structures at the nanoscale (see images). The project's goal is the creation of 30 photonic crystals, quasicrystals and disorder material to control the flow of light. Photonic crystals (figure 2,) quasicrystal (figure 3) or amorphous crystals are materials in which the dielectric constant varies periodically or quasiperiodically or in random fashion, respectively. When the wavelength of light propagating through them is comparable with such a modulation of the refractive index, the light flow is dominated by interference effects. High degree of control on the flow of light is achievable with these type structures, among the others the possibility of trapping the light, of controlling the velocity of light and the emission rate of a quantum emitter (atoms, molecules and quantum dots).
